With a classmate in Florida and riding out Hurricane Milton this week, 5th grade switched up our schedule and did a fun lesson about hurricanes. We focused on Hurricane Helene and became amateur meteorologists for the week. First we looked at data from all 5 days of Helene’s path starting with where it started as a tropical depression in the Caribbean. We then categorized the hurricane using hourly data and wind speeds. We graphed the wind speeds over the 5 days. Finally, we tracked her path by plotting latitude and longitude coordinates on a map color coding the path based on wind speed (category)! Thanks to Karson for always being such a great help! This lesson was fun but challenging😎.
Questions to ask your student:
1. What was the highest category reached by Helene and where was she located when the wind speeds were the highest?
2. What gives hurricanes the energy to become as powerful as they are?
3. What happens to the wind speed when a hurricane makes landfall?
