Mrs. Schumann's 6th graders are finishing a chapter on Ancient Egypt. They made Egyptian masks! Questions to ask these students: What steps did you take to make your mask? If you were a pharaoh, what would your "Claim to Fame" be?

The Turtle Lake-Mercer School will be hosting a FAFSA Presentation on January 31st from 4-5:30 PM in the School Library. A representative from Bank of North Dakota is coming to go over all the FAFSA form updates, changes on how to complete the form, and how to create a FSA ID. A group of TL-M High School Teachers attended Day 2 of the Supporting Secondary Struggling Readers Professional Development this week. The training aligns with the Science of Reading training that our Elementary Teachers completed in 2022. The attached infographic has some great strategies for helping children improve reading fluency at home.
Mrs. Freeman's 2nd grade has been adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers with some regrouping. Today they used food to represent base 10 pieces to do some math problems. They also got to come up with some questions for their classmates. At the end, they of course got to play with their food! Questions to ask: What did each piece of food represent? Writing it out what is 429-39? Mentally what is 600+300?
Fourth grade is growing plants! Two groups are testing varied amounts of water on the sprouting and growth of seeds. The other group is testing what happens with varied amounts of salt in the water. Stay tuned for our results! 🌱Questions: What do you think will happen? What kinds of seeds did you plant?
The 6th graders finished the chapter on data collection and analysis. They created a survey on Google Forms for the 7th and 8th graders to take. Afterward the students made a table with the results and created a graph to show the results.

4th grade has been learning about the Underground Railroad in music class. They read a book titled “Follow the Drinking Gourd” which is also an African American Spiritual. They sang the song and learned part of it on recorder. Some questions to ask them:
What is the drinking gourd? What was important about this song? What is the Underground Railroad?
Kindergarten has been working on addition! We built the addition and equals symbols with pretzels sticks. We used fruit snacks to represent the numbers! We made number sentences and found the answers! Some questions to ask:
1. What does addition mean?
2. What does 6+4=?
The Cougar Girls' Basketball team is selling Cougar Tourney Shirts for both Boys' and Girls' Districts and Regionals. Orders are due by Saturday, January 27th and payment must accompany the order. Yesterday, Kensley Ruffo and Rhett Laib presented their city, Volcan City, at the Future City Regional Competition in Bismarck. The theme this year was 'Electrify Your City'. Teams needed to create a model, write an essay, and present their idea of a fully electric city. They worked really hard on this project and had some help from a few of their classmates during the completion of their model. This is an annual competition for any 6-8th graders who are interested, and we look forward to next year's competition!!
