Ryan Olson from the ND CPA society came in to speak to Mrs. Slavik's Career Management class about career opportunities in accounting. Questions to ask your student include:
1) What does CPA stand for?
2) Do you need to be great at math to be an accountant?
3) How much schooling is required to become an accountant?
Kindergarten had their own election today after reading Duck for President! They were able to cast their ballot and Duck beat Farmer Brown by 2 votes! They even received a sticker for voting! Questions to ask:
How did you vote for? Duck or Farmer Brown
How any votes did Duck win by?
Just in time for Veterans Day and Voting Day the 6th graders are doing a patriotic unit at the start of November in music class. They are talking about what it means to be patriotic and listening/singing a variety of patriotic songs. Ask your student: What makes a song patriotic? Can you name or sing a patriotic song? Which song has the same tune as “God Save the King” from England?

The Spanish class finished up their unit on El Dia de los Muertos today by making alebrijes. Some of the things we did during this unit include making papel picado banners, el pan de muerto cookies, and we set up an ofrenda in the classroom. Preguntas (questions) to ask your estudiante:
Explain the Day of the Dead holiday. What is an alebrije? Why do people put pan de muertos(bread of the dead) on the altars? What flower is associated with the Day of the Dead? Is Day of the Dead a scary holiday for Mexicans?
Turtle Lake-Mercer School is excited to host a Veteran's Breakfast on November 8th in the school cafeteria from 8:00 AM to 8:30 AM. This event is open to all Turtle Lake-Mercer area veterans to honor them as we approach Veteran's day. This week, TL-M teachers and staff participated in an Underground Spirit Week! It was so much fun when the kids started noticing that something was going on! Ask your student about the days. Have a great weekend Turtle Lake - Mercer!
Join the TL-M band and choir for a night of fun! They will be performing pieces from a variety of movies. A popcorn bar will be provided and Movie Scene Bingo cards will be sold for $1 per card. ND Sate Map Project
The students used the map coordinates to find the location of cities, such as Calvin, Wales, Flasher , Clyde , and Forman. They measured the distance in inches between two of the cities on the map and used the map scale and proportions to find the actual distance between the two cities, as the crow flies.
1. Where is Calvin ND?
2. What does “as the crow flies" mean?
3. What is the “as the crow flies” distance from Flasher to Calvin?
Occupations Math
The occupation for the day was Electrician. We had Electricians working in our building moving outlets and installing outlets for the Tru Community Bank ATM to be placed in the Gym Lobby.
The electricians talked to the students about how they use math in their occupation.
Questions to ask: 1. How do Electricians use math? 2. What career advice did the electricians give to them?
The weather has cooled off this week. Just a reminder that elementary students will not be allowed to wear shorts from now until next spring when the weather warms up. The Cold Weather Recess guidelines for what students are expected to wear outside for recess are attached. Please help your child be prepared for outside recess by checking the weather and sending them with appropriate clothing.
The FACS I class has been working on Jean quilts this semester. Most have gotten to the construction stage. A couple of questions to ask these students are:
1: What size quilt are you making?
2: What are the size(s) of your quilt blocks?
3: How do you thread a sewing machine? And wind a bobbin?
Fourth grade minnow respiration activity.
What does it mean that a fish is cold-blooded? What happened to the rate of the minnow’s breathing when you added ice to the water?
