The 5th grade band students are taking charge! They are working on conducting in 2/4 time. Ask your student to conduct for you.
The 1st graders have been busy practicing rhythms in music with popsicle sticks. They created a four beat rhythm with their partner then performed it together. Ask these students to perform the rhythm they created.

Thursday, November 10, 2022 there will be a Veterans Day Program at Turtle Lake Mercer School in the gymnasium at 2:30. The Turtle Lake American Legion Members have been invited as distinguished guests. We would also like to extend an invitation to any other veterans in our area that would like to attend. Cookies and coffee will be provided for veterans in attendance after the program.
Today in 3rd grade, they used tiles to make arrays to help us use the distributive property of multiplication. Students were given multiplication equations and had to create an array to represent the equation. Then they “chopped” the array into 2 smaller arrays. By writing new equations and then adding them together, we could see that the product for each equation was still the same!
Give your student a multiplication equation, within 40, and ask them to demonstrate how the distributive property works!
Tuesday is Pajama Day! We hope everyone has a fun and safe Halloween tonight. We will see you tomorrow in your PJs.

Fridays 5th and final trivia question for Red Ribbon week was name three signs of an overdose. There are a wide variety of substances that can cause an overdose including alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, and stimulants. When overdosing, signs that can be observable by others include vomiting, blacking out, passing out or nodding off, cold or clammy skin, slurred speech, lack of muscle coordination, seizures, slow or irregular breaths, and low body temperature. If you are ever around somebody overdosing, call 911 immediately. North Dakota has a Good Samaritan Law that protects friends, family members, and bystanders present during an overdose. This law provides protection from prosecution for ingestion or possession of a substance or paraphernalia for up to three people, including the individual overdosing.

Thursday’s Red Ribbon week trivia question was what two substances account for the majority of preventable deaths in the United States?
The answer is alcohol and tobacco! In the United States, alcohol and tobacco are responsible for the majority of preventable deaths annually. Alcohol related deaths total more than 140,000 people each year while tobacco related deaths account for more than 480,000. Oftentimes, people assume that illegal drugs may be the most dangerous. Yet, because of their general acceptability and harmful effects, these two legal substances are actually the most deadly.
Each day there have been more answers submitted for the trivia question and today was no exception! 27 JH and HS students submitted answers with 5 guessing correctly! Those that guessed correct were Colbi Holtan, Charlie Sparrow, Emma Fischer, Kensley Ruffo, and Cambree Schlafmann. From these correct submissions our grand prize winner was Charlie! Congratulations!
Monday is Halloween. Our students in grades K-6 are looking forward to trick-or-treating downtown again this year. Students will leave the school at 1:00 PM to walk to the hospital and then they will head to Main Street. Thank you to all the local businesses who participate in this fun holiday for our students!
Daily trivia for Red Ribbon week keeps getting more and more participation! Today, we had 25 student submissions. 6 of which were correct! The question of the day was what percentage of North Dakota high school youth (aged 12-20) report using alcohol in the last month? 17.8%, 27.5%, 32.4%, or 48.6%
The answer is 27.5%! 19.7% of students in this same age category reported binge drinking in the last month. Additionally, 90.1% of adults who responded to a survey sent out by the North Dakota Behavioral Health Unit reported they see underage drinking in their community as a problem.
Students who submitted correct answers today were Inaia Way, Colbi Holtan, Bridger Rittenbach, Aiden Hanson, Zealand Anderson, and Evi Markley. From these submissions, Evi was drawn as the daily grand prize winner! Congratulations!
The TLM Activity Booster officers met last week to finalize our by-laws. Our next regular meeting is next Tuesday, Nov. 1. @ the TLM school at 6pm. The Activity Boosters is for all families in grades 5-12 who have children in extra-curricular activities such as sports and music.

2. Change in committee members/group names
3. Change/addition to officers (board/voting members)
4. Committee responsibilities

Today's Red Ribbon week trivia question was in 2021, how many overdose deaths were reported in North Dakota alone?
In 2021, North Dakota reporting systems accounted for 131 reported overdose deaths state wide. This number has been steadily increasing over the last several years. In 2019, North Dakota had 76 reported overdose deaths and in 2020 there were 115. Sadly, these numbers are also increasing nationally, going up 28.5% from 2020 to 2021.

Congratulations to Grace Goven and Brooklyn Tomlinson on making it into the 44th Annual Northwest Music Festival for choir! The girls will participate in Minot on November 4th and 5th.
