8th Grade FACS Chili Cook-Off! The 8th graders researched and found a recipe, went to the store to get their ingredients, and made their chili! A panel of judges scores each chili based on presentation, smell, flavor, texture, and overall impression. The two recipes were Sweet & Spicy and Family Favorite, both were delicious! The winner was….Sweet and Spicy! Questions to ask these 8th grade cooks: how did your team work together to find your recipe? What part of the project did you enjoy most? Would you make your chili recipe again?

The sixth graders have been learning about chemical reactions. They conducted an experiment with an egg and vinegar. They put an egg in a beaker of vinegar and let it sit overnight. When they took the eggs out, they were soft and bouncy! When you let the egg sit in the jar of vinegar overnight, the acetic acid in the vinegar reacts with the calcium carbonate in the shell. This causes the atoms to regroup and form a new substance! Some questions to ask your students: What is the difference between a chemical and physical change? Are the number of atoms before and after a chemical reaction the same? Why?

Forth graders spent their last several counseling lessons with Mrs. Slavik working on creating compliment boxes. First, they each constructed their own boxes out of paper and decorated them with their name or initials. Then, each student went around and anonymously wrote compliments to their classmates using a template that read "I'd like to compliment _______ for _____________________." Questions to ask your student about this activity: 1: What was your favorite compliment you received? 2: What are some compliments you gave to your classmates? 3: Is it important to give compliments to others? Why or why not?

Third grade has been learning about motion, forces, and gravity in science for the past week. For the last few days, we’ve been working on building wheel systems and then observe how they travel down ramps. To continue our wheel system observations…today groups each built and tested different systems. As a team, they chose the wheel system they felt would go the furthest. Today the team of Silas, Annabell, and Brooklyn won by a few inches. Tomorrow teams will re-build systems based on their observations from today. They will modify, retest, and then we will race them again tomorrow. Ask your student about their observations and how they might modify their wheel systems for tomorrow’s race!
