8th grade discovering Pi lesson. The students drew a circle with a radius of 7 cm using a ruler and compass. They then placed M&Ms around the outer edge and from edge to edge through the center. We then counted the number of M&Ms around the outside, which is called the circumference, and the number of M&Ms edge to edge through the center, which is called diameter. They then divided the circumference by diameter and discovered the quotient was approximately 3.14!!!! Questions to ask your student: What is the formula to find the circumference of a circle? Ask them to recite Pi to 5 decimal places. Did you enjoy eating the M&Ms when you completed the activity?
