Students in Grades 4 through 7 received The Academy by T. Z. Layton today. This is our book for "One Book-One School" this year. Students are encouraged to read the book during reading month and have an opportunity to win some prizes. This is the first book in a series. Huge thanks to Kelly Voth, our school librarian, for organizing this awesome reading opportunity for our students!

February was National Random Acts of Kindness month. Throughout the month, students were asked to write down acts of kindness they saw around the school to be hung on our kindness tree in the lobby. Over 100 acts of kindness were written over the course of the month! Some conversation starters you can use with your students to keep the conversation around kindness alive are:

What is one way you showed kindness to somebody recently?
Has anybody ever done a random act of kindness for you?
Today, Turtle Lake-Mercer School kicked off Reading Month with Turtle Talks. The students in Grades K-12 were partnered up and shared a bookmark making activity, snack, and book discussions.
In discussion with our fellow Central McLean-Cougar schools, Turtle Lake-Mercer School has made the decision to dismiss at 12:00 noon on Thursday, March 6th due to the Girls Basketball Team playing in the 2025 State B Basketball Tournament. Central McLean Girls take on Langdon Area-Munich at 2:45 PM at the Jamestown Civic Center.
To celebrate Reading Month in March, Turtle Lake-Mercer School will be hosting "Donuts with Adults" on Wednesday, March 12th from 8:00 AM to 8:20 AM. Come celebrate Reading Month by reading with your child while enjoying a donut.
Turtle Lake-Mercer School will be hosting the Scholastic Book Fair. From March 10th through the 19th, students and families will have time to browse and purchase books.
1st grade did a music unit on the musical work "Carnival of the Animals" by Camille Saint-Saens. The composition has separate pieces for different animals. We read a book that included a poem for each animal and then the 1st graders came up with movement that went with the music of each animal. Questions to ask your student: Who wrote the "Carnival of the Animals?" What animals were included in the "Carnival of the Animals?" Which animal had your favorite music?

Mrs. O'Shea's Physical Science has been learning about elements and their properties. Today they did a quick investigation to discover what's in cereal.
Questions to ask
What element did you identify that was attracted to your magnet?
Why is this element added to cereal?
What cereal had more of the element added to it, Rice Krispies or corn Chex?
In 3rd grade PE, Gretchen used her gymnastic experience to teach her classmates some new skills. Questions you could ask: What was your favorite new skill? Which one was the hardest?
At the Special Board Meeting on Wednesday, February 26th, the Turtle Lake-Mercer School Board approved a motion to submit the application for a 4-Day School Week Waiver to the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction (NDDPI). If approved by NDDPI, Turtle Lake-Mercer School will operate under the attached calendar for the 2025-2026 school year.

After spending a week learning about figurative language, the third-grade students created their very own class book of idioms. Each student selected an idiom, researched its meaning, and illustrated it with a creative drawing.
Questions you can ask a third grader:
1. Can you explain an idiom you included in the class book and what it really means?
2. What are other types of figurative language you learned this week?
