Fall Picture Day is tomorrow, October 15th. Order individual photos online! Make sure to have picture day forms for class photos sent to the office with payment by tomorrow morning.

The music department has had a busy start to October! At the start of the month, Kinli Holtan, Royce Wardner, and Jenna Goven attended the 36th annual NDSU choral festival in Fargo on campus. They spent two days singing with students from all over the state! We are very proud of our students representing Turtle Lake-Mercer at this event.
Last week, Dr. Bernier from the University of Mary visited Turtle Lake-Mercer school and worked with our percussionists. He was able to provide some helpful tips and tricks to playing various percussion instruments such as the crash cymbals, triangle, tambourine, and more! Dr. Bernier also worked with the beginning percussionists building a stronger foundation for snare drum rhythms. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from such a skilled musician.
At the end of last week, the 6th graders wrapped up their choir unit in music class by putting on a “mini-choir concert” for their parents in the music room. They started their concert with the Star-Spangled Banner and then sang four choir songs, which included harmony and canons. After singing for their parents, they then went to share one song with each elementary class. The school was filled with smiles and music all morning!
Finally, this past Saturday, some 5th and 6th grade students attended the annual Surround the State in Song festival in Bismarck. This event is hosted all around the state at the same time for 5th-7th grade students to join in a day of song! It is great to have so many opportunities for our students to share their music with others!

Today, our PK-12th grade students got together for their first Turtle Talk activity for the year - cookies and cards! Fun and conversation were had by all!

Colder weather has moved into our area. The next few weeks are showing daytime highs in the 40s and 50s. Please help your child come to school prepared for outside recess if they are in grades PreK-6. Attached are the cold weather recess guidelines we use to help students be prepared for outside temps.

Last week, the Kindergarten Class finished up the week in reading, discussing how tools help us explore. Some of our vocabulary words were tools, discover, and explore. We used a magnifying glass as a tool to discover nature! Things to ask your kindergartener:
1. What did you discover on our adventure?
2. What are some other tools we can use?

Today TL-M teachers engaged in First Aid, CPR, and AED training with the North Dakota Safety Council. We also had a number of staff members complete the DDC4 training with Toni Cottingham.

Mrs. Anderson's PreK has had quite a lot of fun learning all about fire safety! We all loved reading books about firefighters, learning the the Danny Go Firefighter song, and riding in a real fire truck!
Questions to ask:
What do you do if you find matches or a lighter?
What number do you call in an emergency such as a fire?
What do firefighters wear to protect themselves from a fire?

Happy 30th Day of School! First grade created equations today to equal the number 30. Some wrote addition sentences and some wrote subtraction sentences. We even had equations with more than two addends. It was a great day in math!! 🧮

Mrs. A’s 4th grade ELA class finished their “Because of Winn Dixie” novel study and celebrated with a party just like in the book! We watched the movie and ate all the same foods the characters had at their party!!
Questions to ask your student:
What were some differences between the book and the movie?
What is a Littmus Lozenge?
What important lesson did India Opal learn in the story?

Third grade students learned a new math workplace game called Multiplication Four in a Row. In this activity, they drew cards to create a multiplication sentence and then looked for the matching repeated addition sentence on the game board. Their goal was to cover four spaces in a row—horizontally, vertically, or diagonally—by correctly matching multiplication with repeated addition.
Questions to ask a third grader:
1. What is the repeated addition sentence to match 5x4?
2. What multiplication equation matches this repeated addition sentence 3+3+3+3 ?
3. Did you enjoy this game?

We may be small in PreK and have a tiny class this year, but we are BIG on learning and fun! So far this year our little PreK class has learned all about colors, shapes, apples, leaves, the 4 seasons and we are working on writing our names as well as lots of other writing and drawing skills. We are also practicing cutting and gluing. Most importantly we are learning all about sharing and caring while playing with our friends!

The Nutrition and Food Prep class spent some time researching different chefs. Each student researched a different chef and made a foldable display to share information about their chef with their classmates in a jigsaw fashion. A couple of questions to ask these students: Who was your chef? What chef did you think was the most interesting?

Each week, all our students are given a weekly mission to work toward. Students who complete the weekly missions are nominated by staff to be a Mission Accomplished Student for that month. In September, we had 13 Mission Accomplished students. Thanks for Making It Count and leading by example!

TL-M 7th and 8th Grade Students traveled to the Audubon Wildlife Refuge today to take part in Eco-Ed. They learned about rangelands, soil, wetlands, watersheds, and woodlands. Thank you to South McLean County Soil Conservation for organizing this event for our area students.
